James L. Christian Memorial Scholarship

December 20, 2012

Picture of James L. ChristianRemember your favorite teacher? The one you thought was cute and smart, who smiled at you and you actually learned stuff, too? That was my dad.

He was an awesome college professor. His classes were full of relevant philosophical content that he delivered with interesting questions designed to keep his students thinking about those things we all wondered at that age – what is my purpose in life? Is there a god? He introduced his students to the essence of eastern and western philosophy and the mysteries of life. He was charismatic, charming, and his classes always had a waiting list.

He wrote his textbook because he knew philosophy encompassed the social and physical sciences, with a humanistic and synoptic view that was not available to his students. It was a master in nourishing the art of wondering.

It is fitting that he have a memorial scholarship at Santa Ana College. He taught there for thirty years and is still remembered.
