Adventure with the Seahawks – and the $271 ticket because I was paying attention to Macklemore!

February 7, 2014

Seattle has a lot to be proud of – not only do we have the Super Bowl-winning World Champion Seattle Seahawks, we put on a celebration that rivals any Olympics. It was a breathtakingly beautiful day, with blue sky and blazing sun. Not your typical February Seattle weather!

It was freezing and people waited hours and hours. The ferries were backed up, and some people chartered a boat to get across the water. One transplant made a last minute decision and paid $800 to fly from his current home in Atlanta. No one cared that traffic was a congested nightmare and, despite added busses and train cars, public transportation was overloaded. The freeway was backed up four miles north and south three hours before the event. But all that was okay with us.good crowd Over 700,000 people crammed into downtown to celebrate the Seahawks Lombardi trophy. 16,000 kids were absent from Seattle schools (565 teachers!) as parents wanted to make a memory.

My friend’s 15 year old son got to touch the trophy as Pete Carroll held it out to him on the parade. He will never forget that. Russell Wilson

As my friend Patti Krebsbach posted on Facebook :

“Public transpo phobia. Hours in the cold. Losing curbside viewing to late arrivals rushing to the middle of the street. Thousands upon thousands of people. Crowded-beyond-capacity bus ride home. TOTALLY WORTH IT!! What an incredible experience to celebrate with the Seahawks today!! Their pride and appreciation flowed!”beast mode

The Seattle Mariners offered up Safeco Field and its huge screens for those who could not get tickets into the Century Link rally, and we filled both stadiums to capacity. We thanked owner Paul Allen (in the hat below, he is the cofounder of Microsoft) and the 12th Man was recognized for our contributions as Pete Carroll said it belonged to us.stadium

We came together for one single reason. We were a city in celebration. We behaved so well all we rated was 15 seconds on the national news!

Oh, and the ticket? Wednesday after the celebration my radio station was replaying Macklemore’s Can’t Hold Me from the Super Bowl After Party … and I sailed through a school zone, flashing yellow lights and all. Thank goodness there were no children around, and I will gladly pay the fine. It was worth it! I fly to Palm Springs  Saturday to do the half marathon there, and I am wearing my new shirt!!!
