2016 Africa Adventure: A Day in Dubai

May 9, 2016

After the fourteen hour flight from Seattle, I had 22 hours in Dubai before I spent nine more hours in  Emirates Business Class on my way to Harare, Zimbabwe.

Loved the greeting in my room at the Sheraton Grand Dubai. Beautiful hotel.

Dubai is a city of more. More high rises than you have ever seen in one place.

More cranes fill the skyline as more high rises are built.

More lights on buildings.

More everything as Dubai reclaims land from the sea and builds for the World Expo in 2020.

It is rich with history and the future, it is interesting, and it is expensive! I would love to go back and spend some time there, maybe ride camels!

Highlights included taking a taxi boat to the gold souk (marketplace) to buy some jewelry.

There were many, many shops down small twisting streets – and many, many window displays of tiers of dazzling pieces of gold jewelry.

It was so much fun! I loved being able to haggle. I found information online on how to haggle in Dubai, and I think I did well.

I found a Starbucks to buy the Dubai mug. The taxi guy waited patiently while I ran inside. Mug cost $6 USD.

I was planning to go to the Burj Kahlifa, the world’s tallest building at 160 stories, until I found it was 136 USD to visit . So I went other places.

Then I got back on Emirates for the nine hour  flight to Harare, Zimbabwe!

Next: Harare, Zimbabwe
